I was able to get some Saturn viewing this morning. I was mainly interested in generating a sketching template that shows Saturn's current ring tilt.

Please feel free to download and adapt it for your use.

The rings are closing, when won't we be able to see them anymore and how long will it take until we can see them again?

I believe that rings have a 17 year cycle. At this point the northern portion of the globe had been in darkness, so it would be interesting to see if anything turns up north of the A ring's edge as the atmosphere heats up.

Cassini's Division looked pretty wide to me at the ansae, maybe too wide. I was pretty tired by the Saturn was up high enough. I think I'll have to make another observation when time allows to double check Cassini's proportions. If I have to adjust the template regarding this, I'll repost a revised version. It may be necessary to revise the templates for Saturn more frequently anyway as the rings are closing up pretty fast.

The rings will be directly edge on at the end of 2008, and at the end of 2009. They will be very poorly visible until the end of 2010. Then they will start to reappear and stay with us for over ten years. It's not so bad.

Rings visibility during Saturn's oppositions:
