We returned from our 3 weeks of mission work in Western Uganda and have sort-of successfully weathered going from tropical to winter environments. Their dry season is wet and cloudy this year, which is very unusual, but it also prevented any serious observing. We did have time, however, to launch an observing/sketching contest through 3 teachers that we gave responsibility for the scopes, planispheres, binoculars, sketching materials, and other things necessary for the contest. The contest will last most of this school year (began in February and will end near the end of the calendar year).

One of the teachers, whom we put in overall charge, produced several sketches in the period since our last trip in the fall of 2007...and proudly showed us his first sketch attempts. The effects of his efforts and the interest of the other two teachers in coupling observing with sketching affirmed our belief that the combination would be highly beneficial for disadvantaged people -- those who do not have access to "sophisticated" tools, power, the net, media, etc.

More on this later, and we will post a couple of Richard's sketches. I told him that folks on the forum would love to get a look at them and comment on them.

Until then....

Roland (and Linda)
