Hi Tom
I believe they are compatible. I have a new GPD2 mount and have recently purchased a tripod hub from an EQ5 which is simalar to a CG-5. I picked up a Vixen pier adapter at the same time. The EQ5 tripod hub is slightly smaller diameter but still acceptable.

I had a CG5 and then bought a Vixen SXD. I had to make minor adjustmenst to my pier. If you are in a hurry, yes, it works. But if you want to make fine polar adjustments, you need to replace the small top screw that is used for the azimuth adjustment by a bigger screw.
And you need to make a hollow metal cylinder that matches the Vixen smaller inner tube. Costed me some 20€ in a good metal worker.

The GP2 and GPD2 should be an exact fit.

If you're talking about the telescoping aluminum tripods of yesterday, yes they will fit if the Vixen has the correct tripod mounting ring. If it's a new mount, it probably does not have the correct ring.

The real question here is, why would you ever want to use that terrible aluminum abortion that was called a tripod? The only good place for that thing is in the garbage. Do yourself a favor and don't use it.

Here is a picture of an EQ5 hub with GPD2 mount. I am still working on the wooden tripod and have not yet used this for observing.

Pier adaptor compared to EQ5 tripod hub.

I agree with Al, the old style aluminium legs are not much use unless using a very compact and lightweight OTA. Much better if you have the stainless steel or wooden legs. I am guessing the CG-5 has the same type of design as the EQ5 at the connection to the mount at least.
