FYI, Orion is sending out free of charge replacement parts to increase the amount of friction on the alt axis for those who purchased early versions which were defective in this regard. I fixed mine myself but have since gotten the kit, which I haven't installed so can't comment on.

Yes, the tech support guy I spoke with at Orion mentioned this. I ended up sending my first one back for a refund, only to miss it. This was especially true after the MG debacle. So I called up Orion only to discovered they had addressed the tension issue. I ordered a new one and it works perfectly. I even ordered a 16" extension so my scopes clear the tripod legs when pointing towards zenith. This extension must weigh at least ten pounds. And it's extremely well made. Unlike the SV MG AZ mount where the extension is held in place with several tiny hex screws that actually bite into the mount head, the Orion uses three silver hex bolts.
