I ran a search of the archives but nothing turned up. I'm thinking of purchasing a G-11 head, and maybe an ATS portable pier, but was hoping to get some feedback on the Losmandy folding tripod before pulling the trigger. Has anyone bought or at least tried the folding HD tripod for the G-11? If so, how does it compare to the standard G-11 tripod or a portable pier in terms of stability? Any functional issues and is it worth purchasing, or should I just go for the portable pier?

BTW, the usage would be visual planetary and lunar observations with a Mewlon 210. Possible future OTAs are along the lines of a 7" - 8" Mak-Newt and a 5" - 6" f/12 D & G long-focus achro. Thanks.

Hi Kerry,

I have both standard and folding HD tripods. One for G11, the other for DM-6.

I feel FHD is more robust than standard one.

Here is 6" f/8 refractor/DM-6/FHD tripod photo:

Hi Tammy,

Awesome setup you have there! Thanks for letting me know you feel the folding version is more robust. It's a bit bulkier and heavier than 8" OD pier, but about $700 less with 75 lbs more capacity, so I can live with the ~10-12 lb. weight difference. I appreciate your input!
