I'm thinking about buying a LXD55 with Autostar, local seller. This would be for my 102mmf9 refractor.
I have not seen it in person but it dosn't look much bigger than my EQ3 from the photos.

My scope should be on a Vixen GP mount, would the LXD55 be closer in size to the GP or my EQ3?

Also the aluminum tripod that comes with the LXD55 seems a little short at full extension for a refractor?

I can't decide if I should just use my EQ3 (CG4) or buy the LXD55. The goto system could be fun?

He wants $200.00 and I can pick it up, no shipping.

The LXD55 will be a little heavier than a GP. Yes, the tripod is a little short for longer refractors (and a little light) but should be just fine for the 4".

I think I will go look at it this weekend. From research it seems the 55 has less than perfect reliability, so I'll check it over carefully.

It must be about the same as a CG5 which would be a size bigger than my EQ3.

The LXD55 should be plenty of mount for your scope. I have found my used 55 to be operationally great and totally reliable. Any problems I have ever had were easily fixed. Hypertuning it also taught me much, was fun and easy. Upgrade the Autostar online and take advantage of the PEC option too. Good price at $200. Oh, and Weasner's site is a great resource.

I have had 2 LDX55's. In fact just sold one for a a few handful of dollars more than you're finding.

I run a 10'' Newt with finder, telrad and 2'' EPs without issue. The key is balancing before I use the scope. Your 4'' should be a snap. Plus I fully agree that it is easy to upgrade the software via Meade.

One note: I ran my OTA on the original tripod for a while, but then bought (really cheap) a broken manual EQ-5. The steel legs of the EG-5 fit perfectly on the LDX55 mount. The set up is not fair more stable.
