I am looking to mount my C11 on a Giro II DX twin arm. What tripod should I use? Inputs and opinions?

Check out the wooden tripods from KB Systems -- http://www.kbsystem.com/. I just purchased the company's KB1H field tripod (7.5 pounds). First light was last night under partly cloudy skies but it did a great job carrying my SV90 and Unistar Light mount. It definitely was much better than my medium surveyor tripod. It's a typical tray based tripod where the tray provides the support for the legs. These usually are a problem in that they don't fit through door very well. But when I retracted the leg extensions, it fit easily through a 30-inch door. They have many different sizes and do custom work as well. Others here will have good suggestions as well, I'm sure. Good luck and clear skies.

Mine is on a 2"leg LXD or Mead tripod. nice, but heavy.

Berleback has a couple of very robust offerings in the UNI 24 or the Planet which are available from Teton Telescopes.

Just bought a meade with 2" legs. Should be very steady.

Thanks!

Do you have a price range? Any other parameters like maximum weight, portability, etc.?

CG-5AS tripod works well for me, though I prefer it on top of a SVP extension. Just make sure your Giro has the M10 threads.

I thought all the Giro II and III models had M10 threads?

Can come in 3/8" or M10 threads. What's funny is my GIRO III has M10 threads, but won't thread onto a 3/8" post. My Giro mini(same hole) can thread to a 3/8" and M10 stud. Very likely your Giro II has a M10 thread and if were meant for a 3/8" post , could "self thread" to a M10...according to what I heard.

BTW With such a load(C-11), I'd go with the CG-5 tripod without the svp extension and use a beefier losmandy type saddle and dovetail system, if possible.

Good luck with your search!

I bought the Meade tripod that came with the LX90 10". Has 2" legs so should be nice. Will need to look at it and see if I need to machine (or buy) an adapter to mount the GIRO.

BTW - That is a very nice setup you have on your GIRO.

The Meade is a nice tripod, I used to use one with a Universal Astronomics Unistar Deluxe, and it was a good combo. Regardless of the tripod, I look forward to hearing how stable the Giro is with your C11! I had a friend that used to use a Giro II with his 210 Mewlon on one side, and the CNC version of the TMB 100/800 on the other. I found it to be surprisingly stable.

FWIW, I also have a Giro II on the way, and am going to try something different this time and mount it on an Antares 48" portable pier with a CG5 adapter plate. For the time being, it will only be used with my 100ED.

I will let you know. I used to have the a GIRO with my Intes 703 and loved it. Going full circle now to get back to what I really liked. I will eventually put a JMI encoder kit with Sky Commander DSC on the unit. Should never have sold it! Might even try the Tech2000 approach.
