Help: CGE Tripod Legs and "T" Bolt w/ Spring!

One of the "T" knobs/bolts that tightens against the leg has gone bad.
As you may know, this is a poor design with a "spring" that screws into
the female threaded housing, providing the proper diameter for
the "T" bolt to screw into to hold the leg in position. The spring
screwed out with the T bolt and I cannot get the warped spring
to go back into the housing to allow this "rigged" system to work.
Can anyone provide a solution?

Tap the hole bigger and buy a new knob from a supplier like Grainger. Sounds like the original hole was stripped and a helicoil was installed.

Or, buy another helicoil and reinstall it with some lock-tight.

LLEEGE: Thank you very much for your suggestions. I'll see if I can find a helicoil and reinstall. This tripod was bought new by me about four months ago and I've been noticing trouble with this leg slipping for about a month.

It may not be a poor design, just poor execution. Coil inserts are more costly and time consuming to use than simply tapping the native metal and are used because they are stronger and wear much more slowly than threads in soft materials like cast aluminum.

The more I've learned of the helicoil that is likely the case. I will say poor execution in this case, but you can't manufacture a perfect example of every piece 100% of the time.

I worked on a project where an engineer decided it would be a good idea to use Helicoil inserts in all holes tapped into aluminum. Nice idea except the 304 stainless steel inserts would gall with the stainless steel screws. Poor execution. For a bit more money we switched to Nitronic 60 Helicoils and the problem was solved. Later, we eliminated the inserts and tapped directly into the aluminum as the alloy was strong enough and the fasteners were not intended to be routinely removed.
