Has anyone attempted to do this? I'm mounting an 8" f6 newt on the mount and would like to lower the EQ head by 6" or so. My options are to make a tripod/pier or to shorten the legs of the stock tripod.

If the weight on the mount isn't too high you can probably get away with the smaller footing related to a 6" drop. Replacing the legs with shorter 2" pipes is easier that modifying the current legs as the extensions go most of the way up the outer legs.

I looked into doing this for my dob but due the heavy weight and the needed height drop (15" or so) I'm going to go the pier route.

Another route you might look at to drop the eyepiece height, if that's what you're trying to do, is to add more weight to the front of the newt which will allow you to balance the scope lower. This method worked well for my 6" f/8 on my EQ6.
