The manual for my new SW EQ-5 Pro indicates it contains "over 30,000 object coordinates and information". However, the catalogs listed (solar system, named stars, NGC, IC, Messier, Caldwell, Double Stars and Variable Stars) total only 13,740 and some of these lists obviously overlap each other. What am I missing here? This list will keep me busy for at least a couple evenings :) but just wondering if there is some "new math" that I need to learn. I'm guessing the term "object coordinates" is a loaded term meaning that the scope can be pointed to 30,000 different sets of coordinates...whether there is an object there is a different question, I guess.

While I can't claim to be a new math guru, I suspect you are on the right track regarding repeats of the listed objects. Many appear in multiple catalogs so I suspect there is a good bit of fudging the numbers. Nevertheless, there is plenty of meat to keep you busy for a while. You might also want to download the v3.27 update from the Skywatcher site since it addresses some errors with number inputs in a couple of catalog lists (see the documentation). Clear Skies, BrianB.

The SAO catalog is also there. The latest patch addresses a bug when trying to use that catalog.

Thanks Mark and Brian for the heads up on the update. I'll give that a try.

The catalog in the non-upgradeable hand controller, Firmware V2.05, contained 13,400 objects.

When the new upgradeable hand controller came out several years ago, V3.01, it kept the same catalog items:

Named Star
Solar System
IC Catalog
NGC Catalog
Messier Catalog

V3.11 increased the catalog items to 13,740:

Named Star
Solar System
IC Catalog
NGC Catalog
Messier Catalog
Caldwell Catalog
Double Star
Variable Star
User Defined

V3.22 added the SAO catalog, increasing the object database size to 42,900

V3.23-V3.25 was mostly bug fixes and LED setting improvements

V3.26 was not released.

V3.27, the latest release, included bug fixes to the NGC and IC catalog DEC values when between 0 and -1, and a defect in slewing after selecting SAO catalog items. No new objects.

That's what Skywatcher says!

Thanks Jim. My HC is V3.23, soon to be upgraded to V3.27. It sounds like the manual that was provided with the mount hasn't kept up with all the HC updates.

Nope. The manual is likely the V3.0 version; lots of missing/altered information! The Skywatcher support site has the V3.11 patch page for download, but the rest of the release notes for all the other versions are tied into the release packages, and they've all been excised from the on-line archive except V3.27.

The Yahoo! EQ6 User's Group has an archive of all the missing pieces, but mostly they are just bug fixes. Not the best configuration management, for those of us Systems Engineers who live by CM.
