I have had the opportunity to get out the last several nights and have around 20 observations in (that is the good news!). Could have pushed it tonight but clouds are coming in and transparency is low so the galaxies I need won't come in that well.

I had the opportunity to really study and observe NGC 1980 in Orion. Here are my notes:

NGC 1980 Emission Nebula in Orion; Feb. 8th, 2010; 05:20 UT; Seeing II; Mag. - ; Size: 14'x14'; XT10 21 & 13mm Stratus; No Filter

Beautiful emission nebula that I feel is overlooked by its neighbor M42. Soft halo surrounds Iota Orionis. Soft filaments can also be seen. Iota Orionis is a beautiful triple star. I did a hand sketch and feel each of us should view this wonderful object this winter.

Jay,
This is a very nice sketch. It looks very much like the views that I have had. I also agree that there is an awfull lot of nice things to view in the sword of orion that are overlooked because of M42/43. Thanks for shareing.

Jay,

Like all of your sketches, this one is also a beauty. Much of the visible shape and texture details are beautifully captured. The stars are real gems too. Well done.  :rainbow:

Jay,

An excellent observation of NGC 1980 in Orion. I agree that this nebula and cluster is often overlooked with the magnificent Orion Nebula nearby. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos
