Yesterday I got a chance to observe some dim Messiers from grey zone. There is one of them - diffusion nebula in Orion, M78. I was surprised how many details I was able to see. It looks like a flame to me.

Hey, that's a very realistic sketch. You do quality work, sir.

Simas,

Very impressive sketch of M78. This diffuse reflection nebula is always a good performer from a dark enough sky.
You have captured the eyepiece view beautifully.

Frank :)

Simas,

An excellent observation of the Flame Nebula (M78) in Orion. This is an elusive reflection nebula that requires dark skies to pick out. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Lovely sketch. I can barely see this object becsuse of light pollution so it is a treat to see it done well.

Fantastic sketch of this ghostly nebula, Simas! Thank you for sharing. This past winter I had the opportunity to sketch this same target (after many years of wanting to do such). I wasn't able to see the dimmer nearby nebulae, though (NGC 2071?).

Simas, wonderful capture of M78. Enjoy the shape you have captured of the nebulous region. Well done.

Very nice sketch of this DSO from urban skies

I appreciate your natural and traditional sketching technique. Are you using pastel chalk on black paper?

You've reminded me that I am terribly overdue for a DSO sketch. If I can ever get out of the rain forests of Central Oregon.

Thanks all :)

Mark, I'm using plain white paper and simple HB pencil. And that was blue/grey rural skies :) No way I can see that nebula from my urban place.

Simas

Sorry, I meant rural, not urban. :foreheadslap: :tonofbricks: I should sleep more than write or make art. I forget in old age now, I think my mind is going aside from my eyesight.  :sleepy:

Anyway it is a great sketch. Have you ever considered trying pastels on black paper?

Thanks again for posting,

Mark

Simas,

You might be surprised! :) I've been able to observe M78 with a small scope in a white-zone with NELM of around 4.0.

Very nice. Those nondescript objects are difficult to capture (for me at least).
