I have a single arm DIY alt-az mount that I like to tweak. My question has to do with the spacing of the rings.

The rings are mounted on a plate which in turn is mounted to the alt axis. Presently the rings are spaced 5 1/2" apart for an 80mm scope whose overall length is approx. 28 inches.

My question is this: Would increasing the distance between the rings improve the "handling"?

thanks,
Steve C.

I have a stellarvue M6 mount with a 127/1200mm about 48" long, and I found the wider the ring spacing (about 16" apart) the easier to find balance.
