This is my first attempt at sketching Mars. I used pastels on black paper. I've never seen such detail on mars before. I think there may have been clouds in the south, I saw two light areas. I'm no good at Martian geography, so I'm not sure what features I sketched.

I used my XT10 at 280x magnification.

Dear TenthEnemy,

not bad for the first time. You saw some surface details and the norther polar cap. The ice gives a nice color contrast to the red sand. The polar cap looks blueish (for my eyes at least). And it seems to me a little bit larger as the planet's disk, which is of course a visual effect (transversal aberration of the eye?).

But you missed or nearly missed the southern polar hood, which is in reality i giant cloud. It is lager but less contrasty as the polar cap. The next time you point your instrument to Mars try to find it!

TE,

An excellent first sketch of Mars. You have recorded an impressive amount of detail over the Martian disk. I made the image smaller and adjusted the levels of your image. I have added labels to the major albedo features noted. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments. Thank you Frank and Carlos for labeling my sketch, I'm going to have to look up what all those words mean. I'm still amazed that I saw so much detail, the most I've seen before was a dark spot and a polar cap.

I just used orange, white, and gray pastel chalks on black Artagain paper.
