Sorry it's taken a while. Got everyone's permission via messaging to use their sketch, added two people who came into the forum with sketches after I did the original composit, plus wanted to see if I could incorporate Mark's full sketch into a compilation and have it still look balanced. So here's what I've just finished. Looks great to me and will post it to ASOD next week, then add the link here once I see them display it. Thanks again all for the great work and letting me compile it into a group effort. Will do one for Saturn also once I have more time.

Mark - I had to blend out the hard borders of your extended sketch so it more organically fit in with the larger composition. Hope that's ok.

Thanks! I just realized that I still need permission from NUNKY. I think he only speaks French? Just sent him a Google translated request :help: If anyone can write in French please send him a PM asking for me as who knows how well the translator works

It looks great, Bill--thanks for all the hard work.

Btw, don't you mean the 2010 apparition in the title?

No, I think Opposition is more appropriate. Apparition is the entire period for when a planet is visible in the evening sky. Opposition is when the Earth lies between the outer planet and the Sun. For Mars Opposition happend this go around on Jan 29, 2010. So while all the sketches are from apparition, they were all done due to the excitement of opposition.

Hmmm. What's everyone think? Should I leave it Opposition, or change it to Apparition since the sketches span more than just Jan 29th??

Sure :) There is room in the arrangement for one more sketch (or if NUNKY doesn't reply then you can fill his slot). Please send me a personal message in the CN messaging system stating that I have your permission to use your sketch to post on the ASOD site.

Bill
Thanks a lot for the excellent idea and all the hours of hard labour to finish this work.

If anyone has problems with translating to French I can help. My wife is French speaking. Just send me a PM and I'll do the translation.

Bill

It all looks so nice. What a great effort on your part.  :bow:I feel that I am a little over-privileged as I get so much extra space here but then I heard once that god gave us so much extra space, that it's a shame to waste it. Your blending or vignetting of the corners edges was very artfully done and I approve wholeheartedly! A work of art, in and of itself on your part.

I don't know if you can still replace my image after you did all the vignetting to the boarder work because I just noticed a dark spot in the lower right of the Mars sphere as if a hole burned through that albedo feature. I think it was a lower resolution image that caused a dark anomalous pixelation in areas that does not appear to be part of my sketch. I hope I am not complicating this.

Let me know, otherwise if you can live with it, then it is fine with me. Here is a link to a larger resolution image if it's not too late. [When after clicking through to hyperlink at photo hosting site, image may first appear at only 78% so click again to 100% size] >

Thanks again for all your great efforts on this and all the artists that contributed,

No problem. Am waiting for NUNKY's reply anyway so will use your higher resolution version once I get his approval and add the last new pic in from the request above. Besides, the vignetting is a layer above your pic so won't have to redo it, just plop in the new pic once I resize it.

Really nice work Bill, a very fine montage of sketching efforts. I may have to break out my set of pencils again just when I thought sketching was on the outs!!!

Beautiful. Amazing just how much variation there is in the colors different people see on Mars. These are all simply amazing sketches. Thanks for putting this together Bill.

Yes...that is interesting. I know I've read a number of things related to double star colors and howmany people seem to not see always the same colors for the same double. Looking over these sketches of Mars seems we are getting a taste of just how much variation there is in our eyes (and scopes and atmospheres). Kind of neat.
