First post here. Great forum! I have gleaned as much as I could absorb in one go and produced my very first sketch, attached. Please feel free to contribute any comments or criticisms that you feel might help me improve my technique.
This sketch was made on Oct 03, 2010 from my light polluted (red zone) suburban backyard. Seeing and transparency were both poor, each rated 2/5. I use a Tele Vue 102 on an alt/az mount, with a 7mm Nagler Type 6 EP (mag 126x, true FOV of 0.63 degrees). The sketch does not quite depict the full FOV, as the scope was unguided.
The ring structure was easy with averted vision, and I also noted a possible brightening of the ring on the southern side. I am not sure if this is readily apparent in the sketch, but it was subtle at best. A UHC filter did not improve the view, neither did higher magnifications.
The sketch is graphite pencil on white paper, inverted and processed using GIMP.
