Hey Ron,
Based on how much was left to be repaved last weekend, they'll be finished in late April. The contractor doesn't seem to be working on weekends, which means no flaggers on Saturday or Sunday.

I was going to show up and introduce myself on Sat, but am a bit concerned about the "Partly Cloudy" forecast for Sat Eve. I haven't found a Clear Sky Chart for the Wickenburg area (and they wouldn't show a chart covering Sat, yet. But the NOAA weather chart is showing a forecast for 50% Cloud Cover on Sat. I'm coming from Gilbert, which makes it a very long way to simply turn around. I'm chasing a wide-field of Orion and also the Rosette - both of which have already slid into the skydome of Super Nova Phoenix from my usual Picketpost dark site. So, it seemed the right time to visit Wickenburg. Friday Eve is forecast with significantly less cloud cover - do you think anyone would be up there Fri Night ?? Any concerns about someone being up there solo ??

Should not be a problem. It's BLM land with ranchers, quad runners and some snow birds camping out there. Mostly we see traffic for the ranches on that stretch of road.

To echo Ron, the Sophies Flat site is a BLM horse trailhead. The entire site is ~10 acres. We only use the parking lot adjacent to the restroom, but we are free to use any portion that we want. With equestrian activities in full swing here in Wickenburg, you'll probably find a number of horse rigs and riders camping at Sophies Flat for the weekend. Try to arrive before dark, and if it's REALLY crowded. Drive further on Blue Tank Road another 1/2 mile (through the wash) and look for the concrete pad on the West side of the road.

Clear Sky Clock is promising (although it has been wrong in the past) so my fingers are crossed.

Dwight,

Just a Bump. The next Wickenburg Public Star Party will be on April 6. Same Place-Sophies Flat. Look for a current conditions report midmorning on Saturday.

I kinda thought that's when it is, so I've already got plans to "zippy" up there.

It looks like it could be Clear certainly for Friday night but Saturday looks like we will be playing chicken with the clouds again.

Okay, Here's a mid-morning report. At 9:17 AM, wind is <5mph. Air Temp 81F. Sky is 99%+ clear. Sky at the zenith is deep blue!! NOAA says "mostly clear" and CSC says that we've got 2 hours of muck coming this evening. The locals will be there! Be advised that snakes, scorps and centipedes ARE out and about, so wear footwear with closed toes.

'til tonight,

A few mosquitoes too, so I'll be wearing long pants, as the little darlings find me quite tasty!

See you tonight at Sophie's Flat!

Somebody in the Phoenix area must've bought a new telescope or eyepieces or something. I left the house about 1:30 and stopped at the library in Sun City West yesterday. I wanted to see if the new issue of Sky and Telescope was in, which it was and I read it, then played with a jigsaw puzzle until the library closed at 4. By then, the clouds were definitely building, so I killed time by reading another magazine at a bookstore near Rio Mirage, a Mexican restaurant in Surprise, then had an early dinner at Rio Mirage. When I was done, the clouds were quite thick--not a few wispy cirrus clouds but cirrostratus and even some altostratus, so I drove back home and turned on the second half of the Michigan/Syracuse game. Of course, by the time the game was over, the clouds were gone.

I opted to go to the Antennas site 100 miles west of Phx Clear Sky Clock said clear and would you know it. It Cleared! Except for a few clouds that trying to creep in around 1 AM from the southwest they just did not have the energy to grow. No Sun! :) So it turned out to be a pretty good night.

Sophies Flat cleared about one hour earlier than CSC anticipated. Transparency was okay, not stellar(pun). Temps got down to 60F by 11 PM, and there was no wind.
Hope to see you in four weeks.
