Celestron won't sell the CGEM mount without the tripod. Why not? Do any of the Celestron dealers sell the mount alone?

Generally dealers package the tripod as part of the mount.

I don't believe you would really save much, even a Losmandy tripod is only $400 as a package vice 700 if purchased alone.

I have the same need, Bookworm. I have a pier ready for the mount and don't plan to use it any other place so the tripod will just be extra junk for me to store. It really goes against the grain with me when I have to purchase and pay to ship 20 pounds of scrap metal.

Buy the stock set up...sell the tripod. It's boxed separately for easy shipping. I know I've seen "wanted" ads from time to time for such a tripod. At one time OPT was blowing out the CG5 tripod (same size, different top plate) for $99 and they sold out fast.
