They are very similar (made to resemble Vixen's SP), and were both made by Synta, though there are other versions out there as well. The CG-4 was the version they made for Celestron and the EQ-3 was sold to other resellers, including Orion.

They don't ALL copy from each other. For one thing, it always goes in one direction; the few who do it haven't yet had their own unique designs (when such exist) emulated by others. Only a couple of manufacturers have been paid the compliment of having their designs replicated - Vixen (Polaris, Super Polaris, Great Polaris, Sphinx) and Takahashi (EM-11, EM-200). Everyone else has been left alone. ;)

The eq3 has aluminum legs and the latest cg4 has 1.75" steel legs. A world of difference.

The mounts are similar to each other (and the Orion Astroview), but NOT to the SP. They are close copies of a Hino (Mizar) mount that was aimed to compete with the low-medium weight Vixen Polaris. The SP is designed for a higher payload. IMO EQ-3 class is often sold with too large a payload on it.
