I've been searching the forums to see if I could find anybody with one of these scopes, but without success. Somebody on here must have one surely? I have recently acquired one of these and would be interested in hearing from other owners. I have one slight alternative motive; I need some measurements.
I found on a terrestrial first light, that this appears to be a good objective, but with very poor contrast. On removing the focuser assembly, I discovered two baffles in the tube; both reflecting huge amounts of light. If anyone has one of these, and they'd be agreeable to removing the focuser, I would like the measurements of the two baffles from each end. The reason I need this is because from marks I found, I suspect that one of these has been removed at some time, and I can't be sure if it's in the correct position. How critical these two baffle positions are, I'm not sure?
If somebody has one of these scopes and doesn't feel inlclined to remove the focuser, I don't mind in the least; I'd still be interested in opinions of this model.
Cheers
Max
p.s. pics will follow eventually.

I have a prinz astral 500, not sure what the difference between this and the 550 is, mine is Towa brand 60x 910 on an equatorial mount.

Hi Grendel!
I thought you might be along. The 550 is also 60x910 but circle K. As soon as I get it together, I'll do an album. I did do a piccy of the focuser today, which you can see at the bottom of this page:
http://www.cloudynig...ll/fpart/3/vc/1
The wooden tripod is the sturdiest of all the wooden tripods I have. The mount is heavy and simple; no setting circles. The finder fits in a reducing dovetail, and is pretty good, although it had been severely abused by somebody very heavy handed! If the blackening I intend to do helps the contrast to a marked degree, I suspect I will be very happy with this scope.
How does your 500 perform?

my 500 is a Towa and an excellent performer, I am starting to suspect that the Prinz scopes with *00 numbers must be Towa and with **0 numbers Kenko (circle K) like the 660 I own.

dimensions - draw tube length 205mm
baffle from eyepiece end 74.4mm
baffle from objective end 6.3mm
diameter of baffle hole 14.4mm (both baffles believed to be identical - but its a bit difficult measuring a hole diameter 74mm down a tube - a small bar inserted into the draw tube and rested inside the baffles appeared to be parallel.

I would say you definitely need to do something about that, it should improve things no end.

Hi yes I have one it was given to me as a present in about 1968, used it a lot then, even got an A level in Astronomy, now 44 years later still have it and got it out of its box tonight for the first time in over 30 years it still looks ok, thought it was not very good at the time as unless you had at least a 3 inch refractor or an 6 inch relector it wasn't a proper telescope

regards Gordon :)

Hi Gordon,
Just picked your post up. I'd be very interested to see pics of your scope if possible? If you don't want to post here, PM me and I'll send you my email address. You don't give your location in your details, but if you're anywhere near me (Peterborough UK) I'd love to see your scope.
Regards
Max

Hi Gordon!
Lucky boy, yours is in far better condition than mine! Could you do me a couple of close-up piccies of just the mount please? I've still not found anybody else who has one of these scopes; so far we're the only two.
Cheers

Look forward to close-ups if you can manage them.
