It's the same CCD in an Imaging Source camera that sells for over twice the price. I don't really know much about CCDs, so whether it could just be coincidental (physical size AND pixel count) or not, I'm not sure.

Quite low-end, and "5MPix" is the most important part probably. Next one will be 50 Mpix... There are few DMK72 user reports. It manages good one the Moon (but on a smaller sub frame to go faster) and in bad seeing (solar imaging reports) it gives artifacts typical to a rolling shutter being slower than the seeing.

Why they don't call Point Grey and sell something that can be safely recommended? At least Firefly MV 0.3 MP (global CMOS) or Chameleon 1.3 MP (ICX445 CCD).

So, for lunar work would this be better than the original neximage and a DSLR? What about the planets? I read on here that it isn't/wouldn't be good for that. Does anyone have Lunar or planetary images from this sensor?

For lunar - mono is much better than color. DMK72 is used by few people, and similar CMOS is in QHY5 which also is used for some lunar/planetary imaging. But still they do have some limitations or disadvantages.

I am wondering when these will ship? The pre-order started in late January and I was hoping to get some time with it before Mars peaks.

Thanks for the quick reply. to get good crisp hires images of the moon (maybe planets) but primarily the moon would the new Neximage work fine? I mean if its a color sensor can you just use it in monochrome and get the same benefits as a monochrome?

No you can't use a color sensor as mono sensor.

The new Neximage is very entry level camera and isn't a competitor for dedicated planetary/lunary cameras -they cost bit more but the give the edge over webcams and webcam-alike cameras ;)

I'm open to any recommendations for alternatives. Often, I hear vague references to "get one with this chip" or a series mentioned (DMK...?), but I never see anything offered as a premium turnkey option for newbies wanting something to grow with. Therefore, most of us beginners migrate to the NexImage and Orion options, only to want more soon. I liken it to a beginner buying a cheap eyepiece set, only to realize shortly that money could be best spent with other options. So, any guidance is appreciated.

For US market Point Grey has best prices as it's in the US :D

- At $375 you have Chameleon - lunar/solar and also planetary. Color and Mono available (and mono is the cool one).
- D*K21AU618 is very good planetary camera but in US it costs more ($450)
- At $275 there is entry-level Firefly MV 0.3 mono and bit less cool color version - it has similar CMOS to the Neximage, but the pixels are bigger (so you aren't forced to only high-resolution which is harder) and it has global shutter (which is better than rolling in NI5).

So if you want to start with planetary/lunary imaging, learn something - you could choose mono even if you don't want to start with LRGB filters and filter wheel. Just add a red visual filter and you can shoot mono image with mono camera - of the Moon or planets. The trick is that this combination (mono cam with red visual... longpass filter) can give very good results and ease the learning process :D (such filters limit bad seeing, while mono sensor can use all wavelengths the filer pass through). And it also limits other problems like atmospheric dispersion...

The new neximage is a big step above entry level webcams. The original neximage was entry level. If it is as good as it is advertized to be it should be competive with the 450 dollar dbk cameras. I wish they would start shipping the thing so we could get a look at some pictures from it. I took lots of shots of Jupiter with the original neximage and some of them were very good but lacked the details available with the dbk cameras. Still have a dbk on order with no idea yet when it might ship. If it doesn't ship soon I am going to get one of these new neximage cameras just to have something to do.

I was informed that the Neximage 5 would ship in mid-April. That is a bummer, as we will miss Mars' and most of Saturn's peak opposition periods. PiotrM has me thinking of other options anyway, but I don't think I have enough scope to justify a premium camera.

No way it could compete against ICX618.

It can be comparable to QHY5 (t), QHY 132E, Orion similar Solar System images and similar cameras. It also depends what electronics it will have.

PiotrM, you have touted the ICX618's sensitivity and other benefits over its predecessor, the ICX098BQ. Would the ICX618 be worth $130 more (for a beginner)? Opt has an open-box deal on a ICX098BQ (IS-1CU)

Yes it is worth it... DMK21 old vs DMK21AU618 new aside of new CCD doesn't have circular artifacts so you can use 60FPS safely with the new camera.

But if you want cheaper - look at Point Grey Chameleon I linked. It's also very good - and cheaper.

What do you recommend? Keep in mind that my goal is large prints (11X17 or 8X10) or so from solar system images. What about the Flea3 3.2 MP Mono USB 3.0?

You would need insane aperture to make big prints out of planets. Moon prints from C14 would be very nice ;)

If you want good & budget lunar camera - Point Grey Chameleon mono (it can to planets but not as fast)... and an infrared filter to make it nice and sharp. Or the Firewire 800 Flea 3 with ICX445 for faster framerate.

If you want the best thing for big lunar mosaics - wait for Basler or Ximea cameras with CMV4000 sensor (1" diagonal, mono, ~1500 EUR. GigE or USB3).

OK, point taken PiotrM. I am interested in both solar, lunar and planetary imaging. I live in an area of average seeing. I am especially interested in printing the images up to 11X17 inches (close to European A3 size). Lets say that I can spend up to $1000.00. What camera would be best and fit the criteria. BTW, I do have an additional 5X1.25" USB Filterwheel, so going mono would not be a problem.
