If you break a Portamount II down for airtravel, what is the length of its longest part? In other words, how short can you make it to fit into standard baggage?

The fully collapsed tripod is 31" long.

Is this just the tripod, with head removed, and no convenient way to shorten it further?

If placed in diagonally it should fit into a standard max-size "62 inch" bag (30x20x12) so I suppose that is short enough.

Carry,

Yes, That's just the tripod without the mount. If you remove the lower legs from the upper tripod,(only takes removing 3 screws...1 screw per leg) the lower legs are 28¼" and the upper is 26".
