Nightfall 2012---Sad News
Posted 20 August 2012 - 03:23 PM
"Due to the loss of ownership of the Palm Canyon Resort and the inability to find an acceptable venue to host Nightfall this year, I am sorry to announce that Nightfall 2012 is officially canceled and we will advise on the status of 2013 when information is available." Frank Boecker, President, Riverside Astronomical Society.
The chief organizer, Ralph, received notice that the Palm Canyon was closing its doors effective August 8, and could not accommodate the annual gathering. He and others were unable to find an alternative site that offered the combination of dark skies, hotel, swimming pool, restaurant, rv park, and other amenities that made Nightfall so special, at least on so short a notice.
The club has made a commitment to getting Nightfall back on track for 2013, but they did not want to stage a poor imitation of the event for this year at some other site that simply could not match the Palm Canyon.
More information can be found on the club site, rivastro.org,
If you have a hole in your observing schedule now, you may want to make plans for GMARS that weekend. The club will have its dark site open that weekend---it is a great place to observe and image, but it cannot replace the once a year Nightfall at the Palm Canyon.

I found some new info on the resort that hosted Nightfall, it seems like the resort will reopen although dates are unclear.

I hope it re-opens - I would love a chance to take my kids to it someday.

Here is the listing for the resort:
If I had a cool 2 mil laying around, I do think the resort has a lot of potential.
Either way, I'm glad Nightfall 2013 is back on.
