Has anyone converted their Lxd55 tripod to use with the CG-5 mount? If so, what was involved. Thanks.

Hi Jim.
I responded on the LXD55 group, but I think I got your use backwards. I did it the other way around, with my LXD55 mount on a CG-5 tripod. It works really well, and the difference is huge.

I tried that but the base of the Lxd55 does not fit into the CD-5 mount. The dec stop is too long and the raised part of the bottom of the mount also does not fit. Can you tell me how you did it. Thanks.

James:

Which CG-5 mount do you have? The ASGT? Do you have the standard Tripod for it? If I remember correctly, the LXD-55 tripod was an aluminum tripod and as John implied, it's definitely a weak point and would have a hard time with your 6 inch refractor.

Yeah, the original LXD55 tripod was way too fragile for the weight of the LXD55 head and a telescope of any significant size.

It can be done, but you're going to wish you hadn't moved onto the flimsy LXD55 tripod.

What are you trying to accomplish?

I have both the CG-5 and the Lxd55. I have a 6 inch refractor on the CG-5 and a 120mm refractor on the Lxd55. I wanted to try the Lxd55 mount on the CG-5 tripod.

Here's a pic of the tripod with the added hex bolt at the north leg position. This replaces the large "stud" on the LXD tripod. The stabilizer shaft just screws into the bottom of the LXD mount.
