I have a 125-ETX for a long time a can see a lot with it, so thinking the 5" SCT would also be good?
Thanks for your ideas.

and if he likes the hobby he is likely not to replace the scope but keep it and buy a 10-12 inch dob more powerful but less portable.

If he buys the 6 it would be easy to upgrade to an 8 ota if he ever wanted to. They use the same mount. Cant do that with the 5.
that is an interesting point as well

I have the 6SE and so I would, of course, agree with François. As you can see in my sig line, I have done the same thing as François, satisfying my aperture fever with a 10" dob. ke4kso has a valid point as well. If your friend can swing it, go for the 6SE. Great little scope!
EDIT: Sorry - just reread your OP. If YOU can afford it! :o

I have had a 5i and believe 5" is the threshold of "wow";6" is further into the doorway, and 8" better yet!.The advantages of the 5SE is the tripod has a built in wedge for polar(EQ) alignment and the mount has a camera control so only a DSLR (and T-ring) is need to do basic astrophotos
Unless funds can't be strectched the 6SE is a better choice for the long term.

I had the 6se before up-grading to the 8se and loved it. It is a very nice scope.
As the lads have said, the 6se will give immediate advantages over the 5se as well as future advantages.
If your friend can afford it, he should go for the 6se.

Thanks for all the advise from all. Sounds like the 6" fills the bill. Have to keep any eye out for a used one or a good sale on a new one.
Clear skies to all:)

Good luck on the search;I notice all these Nexstar SCTs have good resale on ebay.Even the older 5i often sells for over $400 PLUS shipping,so it makes sense to buy a NEW 5SE for $599 SHIPPED and with the warranty.Currently a new 5SE makes more sense than either a used 5i or ETX125 at the usual prices. There really isn't an alternative SCT to the 6SE unless you find a old B&L 6000 but they seem to be collectible and so priced!
The usual current eBay or CN price for a 6SE or 8SE makes me believe buying one new with warranty from a dealer the safest route.Rarely you will find such a scope locally on craigslist by someone who doesn't want to deal with shipping. In two YEARS of weekly watching the three largest nearby cities clist here I remember no 6SE and only one 8SE(which I bought at a good but not cheap price)
