just purchased a celestron gps unit for my cg5 mount. im thinking about using the mount head on a steel peir, would the farus metal effect the gps signal. thanks, donnie

You're thinking about the effect of ferrous metal on a compass, which is a simple magnet. GPS units use satellite signals which aren't effected by nearby objects.
