Hmm...video of the session? Possible, though could be an issue with dark adaption.

No to Black Forest, but probably heading to West Virginia though. It's darker

Now you can double your September galaxies with last years September Galaxy Log (09.2012). Unlike milk, galaxies have a long long expiration date ;)

Thanks and I hope you get some nice clear skies.

Play with various magnifications to get the most out of the object(s). Particularly ones with higher surface brightness.

Im a little bummed, had hoped to make the BFSP this year or any star party, alas Ill settle for astro camping at a good dark sky site.

Dumb question if I might, when you used the 20mm eye piece with the 4 inch f/10 on NGC 278 , did it appear as a fuzzy disk, or just a slightly out of focus star, but you knew what it was???
I've searched in the area for 278 in the past, never from a dark sky site, and not found it.

Awesome video as always . Thanks for sharing.

First, thanks

Yes, it's a small galaxy in a rich area of stars. So at 50x it does look like a fuzzy star in a field of pinpoints from a 4" refractor's perspective.

It does have a nice fairly high surface brightness, so it will promote high magnifications.

outstanding video, is this the first M object you've covered? possibly bright galaxy's for a small scope this time of year harder to find, other than messier's?.
Thanks again for he videos, with the weather recently nothing much to do , but look for interesting astronomy things to do , in the house, lol.

Thanks Andy.

No, we did M-106 in May's 2013 GL.

There are still a number of non-Messier galaxies this time of year for the smaller scopes. Our problem for that will probably come in the summer month's down the road.

Anyway, I was very pleased with the views I had of M-33 that night with the 4" refractor, which was the night I chased away a bear and a small Screech Owl scared the pants off me. Wrote about it here...owl not included(a bit embarrassing).

Thanks

Here's what I wrote about that night on the CAS site about the owl:

About an hour later after the bear incident, as I went to the passenger side of the van for coffee. Here a Screech Owl was sitting on my van rack unbeknownst to me, and when I approached the van he took off making a sound, and scared the *BLEEP* out of me. So a black bear didn't scare me much, but a 7 to 8 inch tall raptor of the night scared the pants off me.

Gotta love the night.

So there you have it.

Thanks Andy

Sorry about the late reply.

I'm certainly not the best sketcher, but I must say that it was -1 degree at the time, and had at least a lighter glove on my left hand to sketch. So I was pleased with the result.

I did say to my observing comrade (the 25” dob owner) that I wish I had observed and sketched through the 8” refractor, but with the elements (cold and still icy patches at the site) the smaller more compact 6” refractor was used instead.

I observed it again this past week (again real cold at 5 degrees), but with my 22” f/4.5 dob. I borrowed a 4.7mm Ethos (amazing eyepiece) that gave me a magnification of 533x. Though the SN has dimmed a bit, the view quite astonishing.
