I was out searching for a nice storage bin that would hold the original foam packing for my CG-5 ASGT and found this at Lowes. It cost a whopping $5.95!

The case is harder plastic than the typical rubberish storage tubs and has a nice hinged lid that opens to both sides and is stiff enough to easily accommodate my heavy Underwater Kinetics eyepiece case (same as a Pelican case) stacked perfectly on top.

The bottom piece of foam fits perfectly end-to-end and has a little room on each side to accommodate the tripod spreader. The original foam end pieces slide a little farther apart to fit the mount along with top piece of the Orion Pier Extension screwed to the bottom of the mount, making re-assembly much easier. The hand control, cables and the plastic HC holder fit nicely. The top foam still rests firmly on top despite the end pieces being farther apart. This holds the weight shaft and provides a nice flat surface for my Pocket Atlas, my 3-ring observation notebook, CG-5 manual and an astronomy magazine.

The only thing I carry separately is the 11 lb weight which would actually fit inside, but I think it's a bad idea.

Here's some pics:

Thanks

Spectre,

Did you find one? I was curious if other Lowes had this bin, or if it was just the regional ones.

rockethead,
Yes I did find it at our local Lowes for about $6.50
Here's a picture. The original packing mat'l fits perfectly with a little extra space to one side and, when the top piece is on, there is space on top for star maps observing lists etc. I think there may be room for the counterweight but I think that would be crowding things too much. This case is 'just' the right size.

Yeah, me too. I wonder if they'll have them at Lowes here in Calif?
