Has anyone had problems trying to contact Protostar? I've been trying to call and email them the past few days and there is no answer on the phone (nor a voicemail system), and no response to emails. Is anyone aware if they are experiencing some sort of technical issues at the moment? Thanks.

The last time I was able to successfully contact Bryan was 6/1/2012. I've tried via e-mail in August and September, and by phone at various points in between up thru the end of last month. See thread

By the same token I also sent an e-mail to Antares Optics back on 10/22. No reply there either. I haven't tried calling, though.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I've tried the local Worthington number listed in one of the posts and got a recorded message saying the number has been disconnected. There is still no answer at the 800 number either. Im startign to wonder if they're still in business or if something has happened.

I'm still waiting to hear back on this...no one answers the phone or responds to email anymore. I'm starting to wonder if they are still in business? What else could explain such poor customer service? Even if they are STILL behind schedule at least have the decency to provide an update.

Alright, Im getting really annoyed with Protostar. I placed an order for spider and secondary mirror holder MONTHS ago. Has anyone had any dealings with them since October? Are they still in business? What gives?

I believe they are still in business, there does seem to be issues like yours with communication.

Protostar is a small company, the proprietor has a full time day job, Protostar is an after hours business and unlike many small businesses, Protostar manufacturers a significant percentage of the products they cell including their spiders and secondary holders.

It's a tough go, Bryan is spread thin, answering emails means he is not building spiders... but the products are top notch and Bryan has done more than anyone to educate the community about the importance of thermal equilibrium in a Newtonian...

FWIW and possibly not too much, the copyright date on their site says 1996-2013, so someone there updated the site in the last 12 days. I'd hate to see there's a real problem, I bought flocking from them last year and it's a great product.

This is kind of strange. Within the last couple of weeks I ordered a roll of flocking paper and it shipped out from them within a couple of days with no problem. Because of this thread, I asked them to let me know when it would ship and I didn't hear back, but it didn't matter since it shipped so quickly.

It's the spiders and holders that are always back ordered. His problem is really just lack of communication.

Thanks guys. glad to hear they're still operating. Although, the one email I received indicated they would begin the spider in November. I have not heard anything since or been billed.

You could always cancel you order and order an Astro-Systems spider instead.

I live in Australia and ordered a small piece of flocking paper on the 21st december. My first email was answered within a day or so. Mail usually arives within 14 days from the US so its late in comming. I suspect i will be emailing soon as well.

Protostar did my 2.6" mirror I plan on using in my 12.5" telescope.

It took a while and I just let him work without worrying about constant updates.

My piece of flocking paper arrived in the mail today, so their still in busines. By the way, i installed a piece in the baffle tube in my c6sct. It removed the stray light that reflects off the inner walls, completly dark now. Also a small piece in my William Optics diagonal. Its black all the way through now.

Two days ago I got a response to an email I sent them back in November.

On a positive note, they expect to have 63mm Secondary’s in stock in 4-5 weeks…

HOORAY!!! Glad I waited and didn't get the 66mm. Were just the mirrors going to be available, or did that include the holders and vanes as well?

Trying to contact him first several weeks after an order is placed, and then 2 months later is not something I consider to fall under the category of constant updates...

Does anyone have a WORKING telephone number for these guys? I tried the 800 number on the web site only to be informed I had the wrong number, and then tried the Worthington number with no answer or voicemail. To be honest this inexcusable. I ordered the spider back in October recieved one communication telling me to check back towards the end of November as to when the item would be shipped, and have never heard from them or been able to contact them again. I just want to cancel my order. I will not be dealing with this company ever again.

Thank you for reminding me to go ahead and get some flocking for my little 5.1" newts as well as my Galileoscopes, as I have been meaning to do so off and on for over two years now. The time has come :gramps: ... going to place my order now. ;)

Edit: done, and done!
