I am asking because I was wondering if anyone has done this. What I would want done is not something that would be standard off the shelf.

Optical designs by non-professionals have come a great distance, mostly because sophisticated software and the internet allows people to come up with new (and greatly modified old) designs and share expertise gains at the expense of dozens of hours of work
Ask, and yea shall receive.

... send it off to have someone figure it and then coat it?
are you going to grind and polish it before you send it to get figured?

What are your desired mirror parameters?
I was going to do a 4in f/10 just like the scope in Build Your Own Telescope. Of course I would do a few things a little different such as buying a focuser and secondary holder instead of building them.
However I have been going through my small stash of Amateur Astronomy magazines and I found a design that Tom Clark did quite a few years back for an 8in f/6 travel scope, and that seems a little more appealing and 8in mirrors would be easier to come across. I could even scale it down to 6in f/8 to save a little in cost.
I have been wanting a smaller grab and go scope for a while, and I was somewhat set on a 4in refractor from Explore Scientific but after playing with a dob last Saturday I am wanting one. I am not crazy about the current dobs from Orion etc and figure why not build one to my tastes. I figure I could source GSO for the optics, but I am not crazy about metal tubes.
Granted I have never built a scope though... I am thinking a budget of 500 to 600 for everything...
