Thought some folks here could appreciate this.

From the Author:
100,000 Stars is an interactive visualization of the stellar neighborhood created for the Google Chrome web browser. It shows the real location of over 100,000 nearby stars. Zooming in reveals 87 major named stars and our solar system. The galaxy view is an artist's rendition.

Or one can download the Hayden Planetarium's Partiview software. If your computer has a good video card (as for gaming, especially), you'll be treated to a versatile and glass-smooth 'spaceship' for exploring our corner of the Galaxy. Besides the same 100,000 stars, there are many other databases of DSOs, and image mosaics, you can toggle on and off as desired.

Awesome! I wonder what tools the team has for internal use. Such complex code is unlikely to have been coded by hand.

This visualization is stunning.

As Glenn did, I also recommend the Hayden Planetarium's 3D Digital Universe. You get a lot more. The free Digital Universe download includes two atlases (Milky Way and Extragalactic) with many datasets. The download also includes two manuals.

Here's a Milky Way Atlas screenshot from beyond Proxima Centauri looking back to the Sun. There are many well-known deep sky objects in this view.
