Would the The Orion StarShoot G3 Deep Space Monochrome Imaging Camera be usable for begining photometry?

Sure. I believe that the G3 uses the same chip as the DSI Pro II. I've used the Pro I, II, and III for photometry and they work fine. They are very linear through at least the first 15 bits, so I generally try to keep the maximum value of my variable and reference stars below about 32,000 counts.
