Which "The Machine" is this? The only one I can think of is from "Princess Bride", which wouldn't be applicable, in this case.

She didn't break it (at least in the book). The first machine built at KSC was destroyed by a terrorist in the movie, but Hadden had built a second one in Japan which Jodie Foster's character Ellie Arroway used. It wasn't used after that, as to most people observing the 2nd "travel" attempt from outside, the machine appeared not to work at all.

When I left the theater after seeing CONTACT, all I could say was, "They finally got it right!!"
