During the early morning of 2013 JAN 06, the 43% illuminated waning crescent Moon will occult the magnitude +1.0 star Spica for observers in the region of Australia. For Western Australia and southern Indonesia this will be a nighttime event. For southeastern Australia and New Zealand south of Auckland this will be a daytime event.
Observers on one of the two graze paths will be able to see the star winking on and off as lunar hills and valleys pass by. Those between the two paths will witness a full occultation. Immersion will occur on the lunar bright limb and emersion on the dark limb
I’ve created three related graphics: A graze map, preview graphics & data for Perth, and a table of Besselian elements. They can be seen by visiting: www.CurtRenz.com/moon
Photos and descriptions of the occultation would be welcome additions to this thread. If you would like predictions for your location, please reply to this thread with a longitude, latitude, elevation and time zone.
