? Object near Jupiter on 1/3/13

I need help identifying an object I was observing last night in the same field of vision as Jupiter. I have already checked Stellarium, Astrodome, Google searches, etc., and haven't turned up anything.

I started observing Jupiter at 8:30pm Miami time and noticed an object lined up with Io and Ganymede. It was about half the diameter of IO and was an orangy/ruddy color. This thing was traveling fast. By midnight it was well away from the two moons. I observed with several eyepieces, mainly with my binoviewer setup at 200x, as well as my 24mm Hyperion at 50x. It responded to magnification more like moons or planets, not like stars do. Also, I observed the background stars and this did not appear to be one of them.

I thought it might be Vesta, but the location and color are wrong. I even checked to see if maybe it was Mars! My best guess is that I was tracking an asteroid. Could I have found Nibiru? Just kidding, maybe. Any ideas what I was observing?

I think that's a doublestar - a little challenging but double nonetheless. See the doublestar forum for details. Came close to occulting but not quite.

I'm sure Pete nailed it, a red tight double. We've been discussing it in the double star, reflector, and refractor forums. (lol) I saw it tonight just SW of Jupiter. If it was moving, it might have been the moons changing position giving that impression. But, it's a star. Sorry, no asteroids or space ship. :)

Surely its Jupiter and its moons that were moving relative to the fixed position double star? Most of Jupiters hour-by-hour motion against the stars is due to Earths (and hence the observers) motion around the sun and the rest due to Jupiters own motion around the sun

As Tony says most of the changes due to Earth's orbital motion. Plot via CdC below shows motion at hourly intervals against a fixed star background - simple :grin:

Jupiter's position last night at 00.00 hours UT was
about 4h 23m in RA and +20 deg 52' in DEC.
There is a double, Burnham 87 at 4h 22m, + 20 deg 49',
6.2, 8.6, separation 1.9". It is also a short-period variable (the primary), many of which tend to be orangy in color. Jupiter now seems to be changing position less than an arc-minute in RA and DEC over a 24-hr. period.

Thanks for all the help. It is indeed HR 1370, which is being discussed in Darren Drake's post in the Double Star forum. It sure was a pretty sight, and I'll hopefully finish my sketch of it this afternoon and post it. (Not the one in this post - YUUUCK!)

Hi All:

I'm primarily a planetary observer, but as noted above could not help but notice the double last night. With a 317.5mm f/5 Zambuto Primary Newtonian equatorially mounted, I saw clean separations starting at about 160X ( I wasn't looking for it when first noticed). As seeing improved, and employing up to 370X utilizing a professional Zeiss Monocentric coupled with a Powermate, there was a chasm between the pair and the minor component appeared yellow in contrast to the red partner. Seeing was 6-7/10. The chasm was estimated at 5X the diameter of the minor star's airy disc.

...which is about the resolution limit for this instrument so the seeing might have been better than I noted.

Gary, congratulations. It's a sweet double and making news these days. Glad you noticed it and got in on the action.

But, I am puzzled by your statement above. Not sure what you mean the chasm 5x the companion's spurious disc is at the resolution of your 10".

Jupiter seems to be going through a very star rich area of the sky now. I've noticed a close approach with many stars over the past 30 days. This red double is the prettiest by far.
