I have noticed that many types of pier "forms" are used when pouring a concrete pier. The most common seems to be the sonotube. I have also noticed a few of the "spiral" black plastic pipes usually used for drainage being used as forms and then left in place for a nice finished look. Is there an advantage to using a sonotube over the black spiral plastic tubes or regular old PVC pipe when it comes to a concrete pier form? The plastic seems to give a nice "finished" look if left in place.

Sonotube's great advantage is that it is lower priced than the alternatives, and comes in many sizes. It must, however be kept dry, and cannot easily be backfilled before pouring.

There are several types of plastic forms (see my thread about plastic forms here in the observatories forum for a couple of suppliers) that are sturdy, attractive, and can be backfilled during installation (very handy if you are paying backhoe costs) which also makes access during concrete pouring much easier and safer
