the moon can be easiest thing to find but can be difficult to observe with good seeing
when seeing is good i try to go for hard items like alpine cleft - with my c11

I think you mean "underestimate". When I first read the sentence above, I thought you were going to argue that a filter wasn't very important.
The need for it depends greatly on aperture and magnification; an 80mm is fine without it, a 127mm is better with it, and a 250mm really, really needs a filter.
We really need more articles on the Moon on Cloudy Nights. Someone should write a regular Cloudy Nights column on the subject. The deep sky gets a lot of attention, but our neighbor is often neglected.
