Anyone familiar with these Silicon Intensified Target (SIT) tube based video cameras?
The main work horse seems like a gen-1 type of device (e.g., 10KV voltage potential applied) with a Vidicon cascaded right after it.

Any experiences on using such instrument?

Read about them.

Never saw one in person
Back in 1968 gen 1 with video tube in sky and tel magazine

Time to add a closure on SIT.
Bought one, arrived vacuum tube shattered.

Add a diagram for reference.

BTW, the absolute QE is still less than 100%.
But in '70 and '80, it was impressive.

Hi ccs_hello - new one to me - EOD Gen1 between lens and electron gun section but ~100% QE - how would that be possible :question:

Played with Gen1 single and triple stack Gen1 some decades ago but noisy. Reversed polarity on single stack Gen1 and placed photo-film HP5 in contact with output screen to 'catch all the light' - afocal lens projection can't do that :o

Maurice,

Using the diagram as guide, imagine the Silicon target as the image plane. In the classic vidicon (about 10-15% absolute QE), the PhotoCathode is at that image plane.

In the case of SIT, the image section is the intensifier (need 10 kV). The PhotoCathode is at the left side, the photoelectrons generated by the PhotoCathod are accelerated and strike the "Silicon target". The entire Silicon target (or the classic vidicon, the PhotoCathode) is the readout signal probe.

The electron gun on the right hand side is raster scanned (steered by magnetic field, using external coils, not pictured <-- just like a traditional CRT) to strike the readout plate to scan the charge accumulated on that plate.

Looking into the intensifier section from back.
Note the Silicon target (the shining silver sheet) is broken.
However, you can now see the focusing pinhole.

You can in essence simulate this with a gen 3
And attach to a video camera with proper relay lens

I did with mintron bw camera set at 1/16 sec

Yes, absolutely and with much higher gain.

SIT era was in the late 1970s early 80s :) :) .
