I have a friend who owns a Meade LS-8 and a Canon DSLR camera that weighs about seven pounds. Is that telescope suitable for mounting this camera without any counterweights? I wonder if the gear train/motor can handle the imbalance.

I would say that would be too heavy to hang of the back of that scope. It is not really set up to be a AP scope, mostly visual, although short 1 min. subs can be done.

I use a Canon T2i on mine, but it only weighs 20oz. and not a problem.

That is one heavy camera! I hooked up my son-in-laws Canon Rebel to my LS6 and it handled it fine.
