The Colorado Springs Astronomical Society's Starry Meadows dark sky site is truly something to behold. This year, June 5th through 9th, the site will once again be home to the Rocky Mountain Star Stare.

This year we will have some great guest speakers including:

Dr. Michael Bicay, science director of NASA's Ames Research Facility
Mike Simonsen, membership director of AAVSO
Bruce Bookout, director of RMSS speaking on Archaeo-Astronomy
Aaaaaannnd.... Yours truly, giving a talk on the history of eyepiece technology.

Last year's attendance was a little low, so let's try and turn that around this year. How about some pristine viewing in beautiful Colorado? Early registration is now open. Price is as follows:

Early Registration (ends May 12, 2013 unless filled prior):
$40 Adult
$20 - Young Adult (13-18)
FREE - Child (12 and under)

Regular Registration (Ends May 26, 2013, unless filled prior):
$60 - Adult
$30 - Young Adult (13-18)
FREE - Child (12 and under)

Catered meals and merchandise also available.

Here's a couple of the usual suspects getting ready for the nightly observation run as Gwen the pooch looks on at RMSS 2010.

Bumping to further promote and get the word out. This year one of our sponsors (as well as our caterer), The Wildflower Cafe in Gardner (which makes a darn good green chili slopper burger) will also have pay showers for RMSS attendees for a reasonable price only a short drive from the RMSS site.

I'll be at RMSS this year again. Last year was my first year to attend and it's a fantastic star party. The site is beautiful and everyone was extremely friendly.

I'll be making stops at Black Mesa state park (where Okie-Tex is held) and at least one state park in southern Colorado for several nights before arriving! I'm ready to go!

Only 2 days left for early registration, and only about 100 slots left. Better get on the ball! Only 26 days to go!

Update: Pre-Registration for the lower $40 fee has been EXTENDED to Saturday, May 25th! Extra incentive for those last minute stragglers.

This is shaping up to be one heck of a party!

I will be there. I plan to stay at either Black Mesa SP or Clayton Lake SP on the way up and I plan to stay at the Lathrop SP the night before RMSS. I like to get there fairly early so I can get my Casita aka "Moonlight Manor" and imaging equipment set up without rushing.

Did you have the tarp-wall observatory that was on the ATM walkabout last year?

Update: Pre-registration has ended, but there are still plenty of spots available for on-site registration. Hope to see y'all next week!

Tristan: I just got out of a commitment that had been scheduled for the week of RMSS. Are you saying that I can just drive up and register? I would love to come (I've only missed it once in the last 10 years) but didn't preregister because I didn't think I could come.

Please say yes and make me happy!

Yes, on-site registration will be available for $60 and we're only around 60% capacity. Based on last year's numbers we don't expect to sell out, so come on down!

Are you going bring the usual suspects with you this year?

Is it possible to just come for Saturday night?

You CAN come just for one night, but the fee remains the same. We don't offer a reduced registration fee for single nights.

I just wanted to congratulate the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society on a great RMSS 2013. I just got back from there, and we had 2.5 nights (out of 4) of great viewing, and the daytime temps were mellow, while it didn't get too cold at night. Seeing got very good at points, and we were able to get very good views of a number of objects.

My only complaint was, during all the ISS passes, the astronauts never waved to us!

Looking forward to next year.

Indeed. While I was unfortunately wrestling with stress the first two days, Friday and Saturday were pretty exceptional. Managed to do the A.L. Binocular Messier observing program in 2 nights.

Also, congrats to kentak and CCD-Freak for their phenomenal entries in the photo contest.

After driving 1900 miles to RMSS from NYC, had a great Saturday night. Real dark, good transparency and increasingly good seeing as it got later into the night. Met some great people. I am back in NYC, but looking forward to moving to Aurora CO in 2 weeks. Plan to join Colorado Springs and Denver clubs!

Joe:

I was with the group just up the hill from you (we had the blinking light on our canopy). Welcome to Colorado, and I'll look forward to seeing you at future star parties.

And wouldn't you agree that RMSS has the prettiest site of any star party you've attended?

Clear skies.

I had a little different setup this year with the "Moonlight Manor" and the Skybox observatory.
Looking forward to RMSS 2014.

We're gearing up for 2014 big time. This year it will be June 25th through 29th. I'll be giving a presentation based on an article I have coming out in Q3 2014 in S&T. We're nailing down more speakers as well as theme and logos right now.

In more exciting news, the scuzzy green registration tent and the big rental event tent will be going bye-bye permanently! In March we'll be breaking ground on the permanent Starry Meadows Event Center, a permanent structure about twice the size of the annual event tent which will have a booth with outside-facing merch sale counter and registration window, cement floors, and (possibly temporary in 2014 but aiming for something higher-end in time for RMSS 2015) full A/V system with PA for presentations and anything else we can think of.

Let's rock this!
