It’s nearly time for my monthly naked-eye New Moon spotting challenge, which is relatively easy for observers north of the tropics during the months surrounding the vernal equinox. Some North Americans may take advantage of a slight chance to spot the Moon less than a day old on April 10th. It will appear in the form of a Lunar Boat, i.e. U-shaped. Others will have a better opportunity on the 11th.

My more detailed article describing the waxing crescent Moon’s first appearance of the coming lunar month appears under the links for my preview graphics at www.CurtRenz.com/moon

Photos and descriptions of the young Moon would be welcome additions to this thread. Please include your location, date, time and time zone.

Below is link to a photo of that I took from Arlington Heights, Illinois on 2007 MAR 19 at 19:30 CDT while the Moon was aged 21:47 hours, a personal record.

Those on the west coast have a chance to spot a 17 hour old moon. With a good clear horizon it should be visible with binoculars and possibly the naked eye. In February I was able to spot the 15.5 hour old moon with binoculars from Connecticut. Good luck to all.

With a 20 percent mountainous obstruction, my western horizon prevented an observation this evening. It should be obvious tomorrow at 3 percent illumination.

Excellent, NeilMac. Thanks for sharing your fine photos. I'll assume that they were taken on April 12th.
