The specifications look good, but its the implementation that counts.

Just to go against the grain:

If I was looking for a permanent mount with that capacity I'd pre-order that no worries. If it didn't work I'd just send it back. Based on my experiences with SkyWatcher mounts, EQ6-Pro being one, I would not expect any serious deal breaking problems with this one. Sure, this is not in the same league as the seriously expensive other options but for the price I'd give it a go. Might there be some early teething problems? Maybe, but I don't believe they'd be insurmountable, after all, every SW product I've owned delivered what they claimed. And it's not like they are re-inventing the wheel here, SW, in my opinion, have a pretty decent reputation with their EQ6 and EQ5 lines and their SynScan controller. They offer decent kit at an affordable price for us working slobs. As far as after sales support goes, that depends on the dealer. Some are good, some not so much.

My unsolicited 2 cent opinion.

Nice! Lets see how it performs and how much orion is planing to ask for it. If it performs like a CGE I am in. Just the idea of driving this sort of mount with EQMOD is very appealing.

Looks to me like that early discount is a beta tester discount. Good luck with that, let me know how it works out. :smirk:

I got a deposit down over here and expect it next month.
Price here equals about $4450 Canadian.
I also found a price in Germany for 3500 Euros.
And I found some PEC charts from that German dealer, they already have at least one.

If anyone wants to take advantage of the $3289 price it will apparently be in effect until the end of april. I'm currently mulling it over.

I have a CGE this might or might not be a huge step up from that mount. However I do have 2 completely different locations and I don't move mounts back and forth. That one only has a CGEM. This assuming it works out of the box certainly is a step up.

I could continue to use the CGEM for say 3 years, then look into a higher end mount, or get this and not look back. Tough choice.

Stop the wild goose chase and PLEASE post the link/vendor where you get it for $3289! As far as I know this deal does not exist. I can't find it anywhere in Canada!

All I can find is the $3913 price tag a Khan Scope.

Here's a recent preview of the EQ8 http://www.youtube.c...h?v=fd95pnNOMcQ
If I were in the market for a mount of this capacity, I would gladly beta test this one for the price $3289.00. Look at the features! 200mm gears, dual encoders, 50kg visual capacity, 35kg imaging capacity etc. He had mentioned new software in the video, I'm not sure it will work with EQmod, time will tell. At any rate, it will probably be a great visual platform for the larger scopes.
Guylain, the 3289.00 is offered here http://www.lirelanat...rowseItem&am...

On the topic of release. I got an email forwarded to me by my retailer from skywatcher. The email was a notification that the delivery is now August 2013 rather than the projected June 2013. I was really hopping to get some imaging done with this mount this summer! :(

Somehow I think this mount is still a ways away. I attended astrocats today where they had advertised the eq8 unveiling but it was just the same prototype mount that had been in europe. You would think if it was really coming in august they'd be further along then this.
