I am considering an Orion 254mm f/4.7 OTA to mount on my CGEM DX. This is a rather large weighty OTA, does anyone have any experience with this combination?

That should be fine, for visual use. I use a 10" reflector on a CG5. Granted, it is a lighter weight OTA (24lbs compared to maybe 30 or so for yours). But you are thinking of putting it on a CGEM DX, not a CG5. Probably not the best combination for astrophotography, but should be fine for visual use except for windy nights.
