Hi all,
I didn't want to hijack ubermick's thread Greys and blacks and whatnow?!, but it got me wondering... I now have a few questions about my scope, a C9.25 grey tube. It has a few decals I haven't seen on other people's scts in photos. Its got a Custom Optical System decal in red under the Celestron.

On the other side, it says Design Optimized by Associates In Astonomy

It has StarBright XLT coatings. It does not have any markings around the corrector holder. Has anyone seen these on another Celestron? Was there a time when Celestron put these decals on their SCTs? I am the second owner of this scope.

I cant say that i have ever heard of this before, however It looks interesting.
Can you tell us where you got it?
Does the scope look any different than any other C9.25?

Whoever "Associates in Astronomy" are, they picked the least Googlable business name, ever.

Any unusual extra interfaces? Unusual focuser knob? Secondary housing? I'm trying to think of where there is a visble difference to be made. Maybe this has special attention given to figuring. Or, maybe it's like Company 7 and it's just hard to say...

Sounds like a scope that was tweaked by an aftermarket company.

I just haven't seen these labels on another scope in people's pictures. I was just curious if anyone else had.

Can you tell us where you got it?

I bought it used, so I don't know much about it's original purchase.

Unusual focuser knob?

No, just a FeatherTouch that was installed.

Maybe this has special attention given to figuring

That would be nice! However, I can't tell since I don't know how to test optics (I really should get Suiter's book)

That would be cool as well. I don't see any apparent tweaks, other than the FeatherTouch.

Thanks all for your replies.

Roger Tuthill used to label the scopes he tested/sold and Doc Clay puts a plaque on those he tunes. I'd guess you've got something of that sort.

How much mirror flop is there? That couple be something someone would tweak to a really low amount. Otherwise, it's a lot of advertising for putting in a FT focuser.

Obviously an aftermarket service or dealer, but I have never heard of them. Hard to say what they might have done beyond installing the new focuser, but they might have disassembled the scope, cleaned out the stock grease and replaced it with something better. They might also have checked the secondary/corrector centering and done a good collimation of the scope. Too much beyond that is fairly unlikely due to the nature of the installation of the primary on these scopes.

I have no idea but it looks cool with all that extra script on the tube.

Hey Jacob - this isn't your scope by any chance? Spotted this when doing a search for "CGEM Bay Area" on the off chance someone local had one for sale (since paying $1,100 for a used one with Paypal fees, and then slapping on another $100 in shipping seems pointless!)

Note the writing on the side...? It's either yours, or evidence of another one floating around!

Looks like the same scope to me. The "O" in "Celestron" seems to have the same minor defect on both images.

Are you talking about image shift? If so, there's some of that.

Hey ubermick, yep that's my scope. I bought it from that ad. I actually had to drive down to Florida to pick it up.
