I've been thinking about picking up a DM-6 mount, but don't really want to have to buy a whole new tripod in order to use it. I currently use a UA Unistar Deluxe mount with UA heavy-duty wood and medium-duty aluminum surveyors' tripods. Are any of you using a DM-6 mount with either of these tripods? If so, are any adaptors required, or does the mount just screw right onto the top of the tripod?

I think the important part would be a large flat surface of from 4-6 inches in diameter at the top of the tripod with a 3/8 inch threaded post. 6 inch diameter would match the DM-6 best. I would think wood would be more stable than the aluminum tripod.

A surveyor's tripod should have enough surface area for a DM-6 to sit on. As mentioned, it needs a 3/8"-16 stud which may require a trip to the hardware store unless the UA heavy duty tripod already has one.

Thanks for the advice, Jeff and Jim! Jim, the photo you provided was especially helpful. I can't remember right now whether my UA tripods have a 3/8" or 5/8" bolt (I think maybe the latter, though). I'll check that out and also measure the diameter of the tripod base to see if it's at least 6" wide.

Check with Tom too, at Discmounts. He'll be back Monday from his trip, and is very helpful.

Anyone have an opinion/experience if a DM-6 with extension could live happily on a surveyor's tripod?
