What a great story
I just had a email from a fellow here that was looking for a 152C he sold to a good friend 20 years ago and has been trying to find his friend and that particular scope for many years .
We had a great conversation and I hope he finds it
Good luck in your trip

Hi Norm, I haven't laid eyes on it in a few years, but last time I looked, the coatings were still nice and bright. Hopefully they still are. Yes, at F4.5 there was a lot of pyrex to grind out. I worked on it after school for months. At that depth it required a good parabola and that's where I ran into trouble and had to get the folks at Cave to help out.

Thanks Teddy, hopefully it won't be long now.

when I was in college... :p :p :p :p :p

Well I went by my friend s place last night and picked up the telescope (OTA only, still haven't found the mount and tripod tho she's confident it's there somewhere in all the boxes in her basement). Drove a hundred miles home and got in very late and in the rain so its still out in the backseat of my truck. I haven't opened the box yet. She had opened it up just enough to peek in one corner. It's there. I'll go out and get it in a bit and post some pictures.

I just brought the box in and began cutting the tape to open it. It had been hiding in plain site in a vacuum cleaner box with no visible markings saying telescope. I had forgot to label it when I stored it and had been thinking I had put it in an old Celestron OTA box marked "Celestron." That's what she had been looking for.

Packing pulled back. Holding my breath! My first sight of this telescope in 12? years.

Here she is. My long lost creation. Made over 40 years ago. And just as I remember her. (The tube is powder-coated, rolled and seamed galvanized steel.)

The mirror looks pristine! Note the seam in the tube. That's the way we made them in the old days (47 years ago!).

I did the grinding, polishing, and rough figure. Cave finished the parabola, aluminized it and put their proprietary protective coating on it. 47 years later, it looks like the protective coating worked!

Here's the cast aluminum rear cell. From Edmund I think? I know I bought the mirror grinding kit, blank, etc. from Edmund and the spider, focuser, and cell also, but I know that some of it came from Jaegers too? The elliptical flat is from Cave (1/10 wave).

Note the finder still has the 'Passed Sticker" from the Japanese Telescope Institute! How cool is that. Purchased in 1966? Right out of a time capsule!

Thats neat Terra!
I see Unitron and the red knob focuser from Jaegers, Edmund spider, and the cell is Jaegers too I'm pretty sure because I owned setting circles cast from the same pattern!
cool!

Thanks for helping jog my memory Robert. I remembered ordering some things from Edmund and some from Jaegers but I couldn't remember which for what? Except for the mirror grinding kit of course; that definitely came from Edmund. I wished I would have saved the paperwork from it; especially the paperwork from Cave when they sent the mirror back. I do remember seeing that letter maybe 20 or 30 years ago on a trip back home when I was going through some stuff in my old desk. I just left it and I guess it was pitched after my parents passed away.

A really interesting side-note. 13 years ago when my mom passed away and I was going through some of her stuff I did find the cancelled check that we had sent to Cave for the figuring and aluminizing of the mirror. (She never through anything like that away!) I looked at it with great curiosity, but then regrettably tossed it.

Did Cave engrave a serial number (starting with "R" for refigure) on the edge of the mirror?

Tim, I don't remember. I haven't had it out of its cell in years. When I take it out to clean it, I will find out.
