The past two nights we have had clear skies with no clouds. April 30th was a bit windy. May 1st was much calmer. I sketched Jupiter both nights from about 20:30 EST to 21:00 EST.
Last night I tried a few different filters #12 Yellow, #23 Orange, and # 80A Blue. I did see some differences where I saw more of the polar caps with the Orange and Yellow. The Blue I felt was too dark and limited my seeing. I tried many different magnifications from 133X to 240X and even push higher last night. However, it didn't seem to show any better detail about 240X was the limit.
On the May 1st sketch I could see some reddish detail on the edge of the planet which I added to my sketch. Also Ganymede is shown on the edge of the sketch.

I also got a chance to view Saturn although low it still showed some shading on the globe which makes me think my time sketching is paying off. Last year I just saw Saturn as one color with the same scope. I could also see Cassini's division easily.

I was observing Jupiter last night May 1st but it was at an altitued of 20 degrees heading into the twilight . By the time I had set up the scope it was at 15 degrees I found it difficult to see much detail just two bands. A difficult target , hats off to you !!

Thanks Dee,
I had it quite a bit higher. So I think I had some better luck.

Ken,

Very fine sketching.
I didn't get to observe it much over the winter because of unusually common cloud cover.
Skies are a little better now but Jupiter must be captured early.

Thank You all for the kind words.

Frank, I have been sketching at twilight and I have had a stretch of some good clear nights. The winter was very cloudy here as well.

Ken.

Your sketches are getting better. Nice ones. I like to see a moon in the area. Would be nice to catch a shadow now.

Thanks Andre,
I am looking forward to a transit. I saw one a few months ago through an old Clark refractor. It was pretty neat.

Ken.

Its always neat to see a transit. But I admit these days they are rare and Jupiter doesn't last very long now.

Ken,

The more I look at your May 1st sketch the more subtle detail I see that you captured. The banding and limb shading is very nicely done.

Ed Thank you.
I had a good night of seeing that night. Last night was very good as well. I hope to post that sketch soon.
