What those Chinese can't do with a simple bottle jack!!

I'm speculating about building an 8" refractor with a bottle jack crane attached to the side of the portable pier, to help lifting the mount and scope up on the pier. Sort of like those cranes you see attached to the side of a skyscraper under construction.

The main problem with large refractor portability isn't the size and assembly time, but limited lifting capability of the user.

Thomas I wouldn't know a thing about of what you say! :roflmao: I've been spoiled too long. Last time for me was about 1979 before I permanently mounted my 6" F/8 Jaeger's to my main scope at the time which was my permanently mounted 8" Brandt. Mike

I'll have to dial in to Opportunity and Curiosity telecons Friday morning, so I'll try to get up there by the afternoon. Will try to stay through Sunday morning this time, though.

Still haven't decided which scope to bring. The Taks would give me the most room in the van to sleep. The 12.5" Cave would require I bring my VW pickup, which means a slow crawl up the Grapevine and noplace to sleep (except under the stars in the back of the truck, I suppose).

Votes?

Next week! :yay:

I was going to go up thursday, but due to an ongoing case of health ickiness might go up friday instead. Or not, I'll see how I feel when the time comes. I finally have my Discovery in proper working order, and I suppose I'll bring whatever else I can shoehorn into the back of the Jeep too...

Carla and I will be up Fri. and Sat. evenings for sure. Made reservations at Motel-6 next to the Flying-J. "We'll keep the light on for you!"

Will be debuting my almost completed 1959 home-built 8-inch pipe-mount Newt. resto. The last time I used this pipe dream was 50 years ago in the spring of 1963, just before I enlisted. I'm really looking forward to 2nd light!

Cool! I'd love to see it.

Maybe I should bring my Springfield?

I'd have to put the finders and the guidescope back together and on it, though.

Tim,
If it's not too inconvenient, bring your Springfield. I'd love to see it! I don't think I've ever seen one before up close and personal.

Hi all,

Mrs. Bear and I should be there around 2:00 in the afternoon, Thursday, and we'll park and save a few spaces where we have camped out the past three years. I'm wrtiing this as I'm pre-positioning all our gear in the front hall ready for loading Wednesday night, charging the batteries, and making out shopping lists and menu's.....Dan, we have you in mind, of course.

Weather look great -- clear skies forecast --whoo-hoo !!!

Anyone who is thinking about coming up this weekend.....JUST COME UP----we really have a great time, with great folks, great scopes and great skies.

Da Bear

Hey guys,

As many of you know, I start a new job on Thursday and taking a vacation day for Friday would be a no-no. I will be up there on Friday afternoon with a fully operational death star, uhhh I mean Tinsely 8 including what is close to an original pier mount that I will pick up tomorrow. I have not tested the mount at all, so this should be interesting. The motor is all wired and ready to go. I also fixed the slight tilt/movement of the mirror so collimation holds perfect east and west. Once I get the baffle tube installed later this summer I will update the thread on the scope.

If you could save me a spot, it would be appreciated.

Carla and I will be coming up late Friday afternoon with Murray Scope! (See it in my avatar?) We're really looking forward to seeing the Cloudynights gang again. Please save a space for us too.

I received felt, cork and hardware yesterday from McMaster-Carr to line the tube rings and finish the virgin Garth Optical Co. 8-inch mirror cell, which is heavier and more massive than the ones used by Cave Optical and Coast Instrument - the Garth is built like a tank! Also, the new Astro-Systems secondary holder is proving to be kinda problematic. I hope I didn't pinch the 1.25-inch m.a. flat making it fit into the holder. And the push-pull secondary tilt adjustment is squirrely. The focuser is an older 1-1/4-inch single-speed JMI - no problems there.

This old-school scope looks very 1950-ish. The last time I looked thru it was 50 years ago in the Spring of 1963. I'm really looking forward to 2nd light this Friday night. Hope you'll come by and share the moment with us.
