While searching for an asteroid in Virgo (Proserpina, magnitude 11.5 - I found it) I stumbled upon SS Virgo, a variable carbon star. It's really bright red now, near or at maximum at around magnitude 7.5, well within reach of any small scope. It's about 2º east of Zaniah.

Thanks for the tip David. I do love me some carbon stars! I haven't looked at this one in several years so I'll be sure to check it out.

Dave Mitsky features SS Vir in this month's Celestial Events. Very easy with my Pentax 20x60 (my preferred optics for carbon stars).

My 10" refl shows this star with a nice orange color.
