Favorable libration for the northern hemisphere of the Moon coupled with crater Fontenelle ( 37 km.) hanging out over the dark side of the terminator, created a fine target of opportunity for a sketch on this evening. The dark smooth region of lunar lava is Mare Frigoris and crater Fontenelle rests on the northern edge. It is a treat to see a crater extending into darkness with only the rim illuminated. It’s almost otherworldly. Wait, it is otherworldly.

Sketching:
For this sketch I used: black Canson paper, white and black Conte’
pastel pencils and blending stumps, white Pearl eraser
Telescope: 10 inch f/ 5.7 Dobsonian and 6 mm eyepiece 241x

Date: 05-19-2013, 02:00 - 02:30 UT
Temperature: 19° C (66° F)
Partly cloudy, hazy
Seeing: Antoniadi III
Colongitude: 17.6 °
Lunation: 9 days
Illumination: 58.9 %
Libration in Latitude +07°
Libration in Longitude -07° 21’

Frank,

Interesting target. Shows how deep and high the craters really are. Nice work.

Hi Frank,

Wonderful sketch as always.

What kinds of eyepieces to you like to use when you make your lunar sketches?

Best,

Eric

beautifal sketch, reminds me of crater Alexanders diamond ring that is seen when the mountaintops of the crator shine in the early dawn, great sketch again.

Uwe, Ken, Jef, Eric, Peter, Tom, Andre and Tommy5,

Thank you all for your comments.

Eric, I like the orthoscopic University Optics in various short focal lengths and also some of the old Meade orthos from the 1970's and 80's. On this occasion I was using a Meade 6mm ortho.

Lovely sketch, Frank.

I certainly agree with the beauty of these "outerwordly" details that can be spied out along the terminator.

Alex.
